Corn sits underneath all three as an input cost. That is not the same as being the driver, and a buyer who prices gluten meal off the corn board gets surprised on a regular basis.

## Supply is decided at the mill, not in a field
Corn gluten meal is a co-product, and that fact does more work than any other in explaining its price. A wet mill steeps corn until the kernel softens, then separates it into germ for oil, bran and steep liquor for corn gluten feed, starch for sweeteners and ethanol, and the protein fraction that gets dried into gluten meal. Nobody builds a wet mill to make gluten meal. The mill runs on demand for high fructose corn syrup, industrial starch and, at some plants, ethanol, so how many tons of meal exist in a given month falls out of a grind decision made for other products entirely.

That is backwards from how soybean meal works. Crush capacity gets built specifically to make oil and meal, so when protein demand rises the industry can answer it. Wet milling cannot. If sweetener demand softens and a mill throttles back, gluten meal tightens whether or not a single feed buyer wanted less protein. ## The quote list is short, and that matters

## Soybean meal is the number it argues against
Every protein feed on this site is measured against soybean meal, and gluten meal is measured hardest of all because it competes for the same slot. ## The pigment premium nobody else can bid for
Corn gluten meal carries xanthophyll pigments, and they put color into egg yolks and into broiler skin and shanks. Consumers buy on that color whether or not they could tell you why, so layer and broiler integrators treat pigment as a specification, not a bonus. There is no cheap substitute at that concentration. When egg or broiler economics are strong, the poultry bid lifts gluten meal in a way that has nothing to do with protein arithmetic, and a dairy or feedlot buyer trying to price it on protein alone will not see that coming.

A smaller bid comes from outside the feed trade entirely. Corn gluten meal is sold into lawn and garden as a natural pre-emergent weed suppressant and a slow-release nitrogen source, and that customer is far less sensitive to a twenty dollar move per ton than a feed mill is.

## Where corn actually comes in
