Wet distillers grains carry a real per-ton discount against DDGS, but it only pays off within a short haul of the plant, before freight erases it. This guide walks through when wet cake pencils out and when dry is the safer buy.

Wet and dry distillers grains are the same feed at different moisture. Both are the distillers grains an ethanol plant makes from corn; the plant either ships them wet straight off the line or dries them into DDGS. The choice is not about quality. It is about water, and water decides who can feed which and how far it can travel.
The moisture ladder
There are three common forms off the same stream. Wet distillers grains run about 65 to 70 percent moisture, roughly a third dry matter. Modified distillers grains are partly dried to around 45 to 55 percent moisture. DDGS is dried down near 90 percent dry matter. Same nutrients underneath, three very different amounts of water riding along.
Shelf life and haul radius
Water is why wet feed is a local feed. Wet distillers grains spoil fast once they are made, a matter of a few days in warm weather and a bit longer in the cold, so they have to be fed soon after delivery or ensiled to keep. Drying stops the clock: DDGS keeps for months and ships by rail across the country or overseas. The haul radius follows the same logic. Wet grains only pencil within a short drive of the plant, often quoted around a hundred miles, because past that you are paying freight to move water. Modified sits in between, and DDGS goes anywhere.
Who can feed wet
Wet distillers grains suit an operation big enough and close enough to use a load before it spoils, a feedlot or a large dairy near an ethanol plant. Those feeders often pay less per pound of actual feed for taking the water on, which is the trade for the handling and the short shelf life. A smaller or distant operation takes DDGS instead and pays for the drying in the price. Modified distillers grains are the middle ground, dried enough to widen the haul radius and stretch the shelf life while keeping part of the wet discount, which is why plants make all three forms.

It will always look cheap per ton next to DDGS, and that is the trap: a ton of wet grains is mostly water, so its price per ton of actual dry feed is far higher than the sticker. Move both to a dry-matter basis, the way the compare-feeds guide shows, before you call one cheaper. Wet can be the better buy for the right feeder, but only after the water is priced out.
