What is sunflower meal?

Sunflower meal is what is left after sunflower seed is crushed for oil: a mid-protein, high-fiber feed ingredient grown mostly in the Dakotas. How much hull was removed before crushing decides almost everything about how it feeds and what it is worth.

Where it comes from

Two different crops are called sunflower. Confection sunflower is grown for the seed itself, for snacking and bird feed, and it does not go to a crusher. Oilseed sunflower is grown for the oil, and it is the one behind this meal. North Dakota and South Dakota grow the large majority of the US oilseed crop, with smaller acreage in Minnesota, Kansas, Colorado and Texas, so the supply behind an American load is a northern Plains supply rather than a Corn Belt one.

Most of the US crop is now high-oleic, a type bred for a fatty-acid profile that is stable at frying temperatures. That shift was driven by food-service demand for a frying oil that holds up without partial hydrogenation, and it matters here only indirectly: it is a reason the oil side of the crush has a firm buyer, which is what keeps seed getting crushed and meal reaching the market at all.

A sunflower seed is roughly a quarter hull by weight, and the hull is nearly all fiber. What the crusher does with it produces a ladder rather than a single product.

With-hull meal, the cheapest to make and the most common in commercial trade, runs around 28 to 30 percent crude protein with crude fiber in the 20s. Partially dehulled meal lands around 34 to 38 percent protein with the fiber down correspondingly. Fully dehulled meal can reach the high 30s or low 40s and starts to look like a soybean meal substitute on the protein line.

Those are ranges rather than specifications on purpose. A load quoted as sunflower meal without a protein number attached is not a defined product, and the difference between the top and bottom of that ladder is larger than the difference between many separate ingredients on the board. Always read the protein guarantee and the fiber figure together, and normalize on a cost per unit of protein before comparing anything. The amino acid picture, which is not what most people assume

Sunflower meal is often described as being short on methionine. That has it backwards. On methionine sunflower meal actually compares well against soybean meal; the amino acid it runs short on is lysine. That single fact explains most of its species fit.

Ruminants are the natural buyer. A cattle ration tolerates the fiber the hull brings, and rumen microbes do their own work on the amino acid profile, so the lysine gap matters far less. Beef and dairy rations are where most US sunflower meal goes.

Monogastrics are the harder sell. Poultry and swine feel both constraints at once: the fiber dilutes the energy density of the ration, and lysine is usually the first limiting amino acid in a corn-based diet, which is exactly where sunflower meal is weakest. It can still work at modest inclusion rates alongside a lysine source, but it is a partial substitute rather than a drop-in one. What moves the price

Three things, in roughly this order.

The crush, not the meal. Nobody crushes sunflower seed to make meal. The decision is driven by the oil, so the volume of meal reaching the market is a function of crush margins and vegetable oil demand rather than of what a feeder is willing to pay for protein. When the oil bid is strong, seed gets crushed and meal shows up whether or not the feed market wanted it.

The world price, which is set elsewhere. The US is a small player in global sunflower. Ukraine, Russia and Argentina dominate world sunflower seed production and sunflower meal trade, so the international price level is set outside North America and disruption in the Black Sea reaches a Dakota basis whether or not anything changed domestically. This is a genuine difference from a market like DDGS, where the price is a US story end to end.

Soybean meal. Whatever the world does, the domestic bid is anchored by the alternative sitting next to it on the board. Sunflower meal generally prices at a discount to soybean meal, and the size of that discount is the market's running answer to two questions: how much less protein is in this load, and how much fiber came with it. When soybean meal runs up, sunflower meal usually follows it and the discount does the adjusting.
