Corn price per ton calculator

Multiply a corn price per bushel by 35.71 for the price per ton. Convert any corn quote between bushels, tons, hundredweight, metric tons and kilograms.

Per bushel (56 lb) —
Per hundredweight —
Per metric ton —
Per kilogram —
Per ton of dry matter (87.9% DM) —
Per pound of TDN (88% of DM) —

Conversions use fixed weights: a bushel of shelled corn is 56 lb in USDA's Agricultural Handbook 697, a ton is 2,000 lb, and a metric ton is 1,000 kg, or 2,204.62 lb (a pound is 0.45359237 kg, per NIST). The dry-matter and TDN lines use the same corn book values as the site's cost board: 87.9 percent dry matter and 88 percent TDN on a dry-matter basis, from Kansas State University Extension's feed composition table (MF3648). This is arithmetic on the price you enter, not a quote or a forecast.

Bushels to tons

A ton of corn is 35.71 bushels: 2,000 pounds divided by the 56-pound bushel. Multiply a bushel price by 35.71 for the price per ton, and divide a ton price by 35.71 for the price per bushel. A metric ton is 39.37 bushels.

Where the corn price comes from

USDA's weekly Grain Co-Products report quotes the average price ethanol plants pay for corn in dollars per bushel. The Ration's corn price page converts it to dollars per ton at 56 pounds a bushel, so it sits on the same footing as the feedstuffs USDA quotes per ton, and charts it back to 2022. A local elevator bid differs from it by the local basis.

Per ton of dry matter and per pound of energy

Corn as sold is about 12 percent water. The dry-matter price is the price per ton divided by 0.879, and the cost of a pound of TDN divides that by 1,760 pounds, the TDN in a ton of corn dry matter. That cost per pound of TDN is the corn benchmark every energy feed on the cheapest-energy board is measured against; the corn and soybean meal benchmark guide explains why. A load wetter or drier than the book value carries a different amount of dry matter: run it through the feed cost-per-nutrient calculator with its own dry matter.
